Drywall Repair
Drywall repair is one of the most requested services we receive on a daily basis. It takes years of experience and practice to become proficient at this skill. Below is a list of the most common requests we receive and our repair strategies.
Drywall Repair - Midsize Holes
Purchase stick on mesh patches from your local hardware store
Clean the wall with windex or a light cleaner
Sand it with a light 120 grit sand paper to make surface rough
Stick the patch over the hole and cover it with two or three thin layers of drywall mud
Follow the instruction on the box on how to mix drywall mud
You can speed up the process by using fast setting drywall patch for the first coat
Apply 2 coats and wait for them to dry
Sand again with the same 120 grit sand paper
Apply a 3rd and 4th coat as necessary to blend the patch with the surrounding wall
Apply a final coat of mud
Remember to make your drywall mud in a bucket with a lid so you can make a large enough batch to reuse it for the 3rd and 4th coats
Sand with a light drywall sanding patch
Paint the patch area with a primer
Repaint the entire wall
This repair should take 6 to 7 hours plus drying time between coats
Drywall Repair - Nail/Screw Removal & Small Holes
When you remove a nail or screw from the wall there will be a protrusion on the wall from the drywall or paint
Blend it in with the surrounding area and make a dent over the hole
The rounded end of a screwdriver handle or the of a wooden kitchen spoon will allow you to indent the surface of the area
Use a 120 grit sand paper to roughen up the surrounding area
Patch the dent with quick dry drywall mud
Blend in the surrounding area
This will not likely need a fine sand but if the drywall compound doesn’t blend in with the texture of the wall sand before prime painting the wall
This repair should take 1 to 2 hours plus drying time
Drywall Repairs - Stress Cracks
Stress cracks are common at wall and ceiling intersections. They also show up around window and door openings headers and sills. The cracks are the result of framing movement and are hard to fix permanently. However, using spray-on crack repair is a good way to extend the life of your patch.
If the crack is larger than ½” use the mid size hole repair guidelines with mesh support
If the crack is less than ½” you can fill it with drywall mud
Then apply the repair spray
Let the spray dry for 15 to 20 minutes then sand the patch area to blend in with the surrounding wall
If this doesn’t work apply a thin layer of drywall mud quick dry repair patch and paint over the area to blend in the wall with a final coat of paint
This repair should take 1 to 2 hours plus drying time
