• What is the weight of the object?

• Where is the installation location?

• What is the structure behind the wall

• How is the object hung?

  • Wire cable, lip from frame, or brackets surrounding the object

How My Handy Neighbour Approaches Picture and Artwork Hanging

• Get a general weight on the object and confirm if hidden fastners will work on the existing structural wall

  • If location doesn’t have a stud and the object is too heavy for a drywall screw consider installing a backing into wall between the studs spaced at 16” on center

  • If steel stud add wood backing

• If backing is required remove the drywall with a drywall saw and hide the cut from stud to stud

• Install ¾” plywood or 2 x 10 in the new exposed location use large wood screws to fasten the backing and fill back in the hole with the drywall patch

  • Repair the drywall and add a base coat to protect the area before installing the painting or mirror

• We recommend stainless steel brackets and hardware

• For paintings we recommend wire

• For mirrors and hanging doors we recommend chain

• Make a template of the object out of cardboard if you can’t lift it into place and mark out the center

• Review the wire or chain location on the backside of the object and reference the location down from the center making sure you have put tension on the wire to allow for deflection when the object is hanging  

• Install your fasteners to the backing or drywall wall double checking that you have the correct measurements from the backside of your hanging object.

• Add rubber bumpers on the bottom backside corners of the large object to avoid scratches and dents during installation

  • This will also flatten out the mirror or large painting off the wall due to the hanger and wire

• This installation can take anywhere from 2-6 hours depending on your installation and if you need backing
