Replace Microwave Hood Fan
My Handy Neighbour is proud to offer you professional service with replacing your microwave hood fan. Below is a list of things to consider before the replacement and the steps we follow to complete the project to your satisfaction.
Before My Handy Neighbour Replaces Your Microwave Hood Fan
We will help you decide the type of microwave hood fan you want
If you have a gas range you need a minimum 24” above the range to meet code because it required a higher fan speed and distance from the cooking surface
My Handy Neighbour recommends a distance of 24” to 30” from the cook top for a gas range
If you have a convection burner 18” to 24” above the cooking surface is fine
My Handy Neighbour measures the width of your existing cabinets to make sure you can fit the new microwave hood fan in this existing location
Microwave hood fans come in 30” widths and this is pretty common unless you have a very old kitchen cabinet installation
How My Handy Neighbour Replaces Your Microwave Hood Fan
We remove the existing hood fan by turning off the breaker and removing the mounting brackets inside the unit to the underside of the cabinet
We then remove the grommets from the black and white wires and disconnect the ground or copper wire
This will allow the hood fan to come down from the cabinet location easily.
If not your missing a screw somewhere, we will check the sides of the cabinet or the inside of the hood fan with a flashlight to make sure
We then clean the surface of the cabinets and the back wall thoroughly before mounting the new microwave hood fan
Thereafter we find the studs that will support your new back mounting bracket that come with a paper template for your hood fan installation
We then install the mounting bracket with Supplied heavy duty screws
If we can’t find studs to support the bracket, we will take out the drywall and reframe the support areas with 2X10’s or appropriate wood backing
We then replace the drywall and seal up joints behind the microwave if its on an exterior wall and then add insulation and poly as required by code
The next step is to screw holes in the cabinet in the shelf that will support the hood fan
We always make sure to measure after we have installed the support backing plate
We then lift into place the hood fan making sure to use the appropriate ventilation fan on the top of the microwave hood fan
Fans are designed with back ventilation or vertical ventilation to change the direction of the internal fan, we can install it you as wish
We make sure the hard wired wiring is installed into an appropriate GFI plug into the wall in the upper cabinet
Microwave hood fans are not hard wired but plugs with three prongs
We test your microwave hood fan only and set up the time
Last step is to install the glass plate that spins in the microwave and make sure to remove all the stickers inside the microwave before testing it
